    DfT has released details on the highways incentive fund and also have released a new tool - the Highways Maintenance Appraisal Tool (HMAT) that aims to provide a better understanding of the full benefits of highways maintenance

  2. Roy Brannen appointed Chief Executive of Transport Scotland

    23 October 2015

    Roy Brannen has been appointed as the new chief executive of Transport Scotland. Mr Brannen, currently Director of Trunk Roads and Bus Operations at Transport Scotland, will take up the post in early November. He succeeds current chief executive David Middleton CBE, who is shortly leaving Transport Scotland on secondment to take up the chief executive role at Historic Environment Scotland. Roy has worked in Transport Scotland and Transport Directorate since joining the then Scottish Executive in 1999.

  4. Positive Steps taken by DfT and Code of Practice Steering Group

    20 October 2015

    The Department for Transport is delighted to report that the consultation process on the draft revised Code of Practice has seen an overwhelming response from the sector. More than 600 comments have been received from several dozen organisations, representing not only highways, structures and lighting practitioners, but also views from professional institutions, user groups, risk, legal and insurance backgrounds. Such a response has not only highlighted the levels of interest in the revised Code from across the industry, but also emphasised the importance that such critical guidance is fit for purpose when it is published.

  5. HMEP e-learning toolkit now available

    19 October 2015

    An on-line, free to access, Asset Management E-Learning Toolkit that provides a consistent way for staff working in Local Highway Authorities to learn the essential, long-term planning skills needed to help deliver better roads and services, more efficiently, is now available from HMEP. The new online training system allows highway practitioners to learn in their own time, at their own pace, while generating a completion certificate in association with The Chartered Institution of Highways Transportation (CIHT).

  6. Tipping point for councils to see the light on LEDs - latest in Transportation Professional

    A Street Lighting Toolkit launched this year by the Scottish Futures Trust – and applicable across the UK – is helping to convince authorities that now is the time to switch to LED lighting. How can the UK save £13Bn and 30Mt of CO2 over the next 25 years? Light emitting diodes, or LEDs, could offer the answer.

  7. Moves to set up Accreditation Process to support the Structures Toolkit

    Liz Kirkham, from Gloucestershire County Council and Deputy Chairman of the UK Bridges Board writes in her new capacity as Chair of the Structures Valuation Accreditation Board. Liz explains the latest on the Structures Toolkit and the reasons behind the establishment of an accreditation process. This is being developed so as to ensure that the valuation module has been implemented consistently by software suppliers, and that the valuation figures produced are therefore comparable and auditable, regardless of the product used.

    The UK Roads Liaison Group (UKRLG) is supporting National Women in Engineering Day (NWED) today (23 June) and encouraging more women to take up careers in highways and transportation. The aim of the day is to celebrate the work that women do in engineering, and to showcase the great careers that are available for women in the engineering sector.

  10. Changes to how Transport Infrastructure Assets are assessed

    New guidance is being released by CIPFA – the Chartered Institute of Public Finance & Accountancy – to support the existing Code of Practice on Transport Infrastructure Assets.
