Codes of practice
Since its inception, the UK Roads Liaison Group (UKRLG) has considered the dissemination of best practice one of its key roles. Accordingly, it has published three codes of practice
- Well-Lit Highways, on street lighting management
- Well-Managed Roads, on highway maintenance management
- Well-Managed Structures, on bridge maintenance management
The UKRLG and its boards recognise that highways maintenance is a constantly changing discipline. The codes of practice are deliberately designed with an eye to future updates. It is planned to revamp each of the codes at intervals not exceeding five years.
A summary booklet, Maintaining a Vital Asset, is available to help local authority highways professionals explain the importance of the codes of practice to elected councillors and members of the public. This can be downloaded here. Printed copies of the booklet are available in packs of 25 priced £12, quoting Product Code 56 DSG 02478 (English) or 56 DSG 02478 W (Welsh) from DfT Publications (Tel: 0870 1226 236; Fax: 0870 1226 237; Textphone 0870 1207 405; Email dft@twoten.press.net; or online www.publications.dft.gov.uk).
The UK Roads Board has supplemented Well-Managed Highways with guidance on the handling of compensations claims. This can be downloaded here. The UK Bridges Board has also commissioned some best practice guides on the maintenance of some specialist structures. Details can be found here.
